Pete Lange established NORTH COAST TRADING COMPANY in 1976 to carry on the sailor’s art of scrimshaw with fine ivory engravings, jewelry and sculpture. Using rare fossil ivory, he made his mark in the jewelry and collectibles world with unique designs and intriguing combinations of ivory, gemstones, unusual woods and metals.
In the early 1980’s, Pete began experimenting with man-made materials to reproduce NORTH COAST designs in useful and decorative gifts. These beautiful pieces caught the interest of small gift shops across the country, and soon Pete had to set aside his one-of-a-kind pieces to take care of larger manufacturing efforts.
Today, Pete is collaborating with his wife, Cindy, to return to his jewelry art while continuing his popular gift line. NORTH COAST gifts continue to be made in their Seattle workshop, and Pete & Cindy are careful to make each gift a little masterpiece of its own, whether it is one of their best-selling cribbage/domino boxes or a charming Christmas ornament. To keep their art perspectives fresh, Pete & Cindy divide their time between Seattle, Maui and other travel destinations as the creative muse leads them.
